On Monday January 11, 2010 a ceremony was held commemorating the opening of the Anzaldúa International Bridge. This bridge connects the city of Mission Texas with the western edge of the city of Reynosa Tamaulipas on the Mexican side. The Anzaldúa bridge inauguration is the first new land port of entry in a 10 year lapse as the last one was inaugurated in the year 2000 between Laredo and Nuevo Laredo.
At the ceremony Mexican President Felipe Calderón was quoted as saying “Our economies are designed to complement each other” and “one economy is intense in capital, the American. Ours is intense in workforce.” This new port of entry is expected to cut travel time by at least 30 minutes from the Rio Grande Valley to Monterrey, Mexico.
It’s quite fitting that this bridge was named after Gloria E. Anzaldúa, a woman who called for people of different races to not be divided by race and instead asked for them to conquer their fears and come together to create a less divided more unified world.
